General Information

The musical activities organized on the premises of the Baron d’Erlanger palace are the visible face of the far-reaching activities carried out by the Centre for Arab and Mediterranean Music.  Since its creation, the CAMM had contributed to the preservation and enhancement of universal musical heritage. Obviously, priority is given to Tunisian, Arab and Mediterranean music, but this does not preclude an ever greater opening to music from other regions of the world.

The nature of the CAMM’s musical activities illustrates its strategy regarding the preservation and enhancement of musical heritage.  Indeed, besides concerts, master classes, colloquia and conferences are organized regularly to provide a better understanding – even a new perception- of this heritage.  The Centre for Arab and Mediterranean Music’s approach with respect to preserving, presenting and interpreting musical heritage is not restricted to attempts at reconstructing traditional or inherited music.  The opportunity is also provided to musicians inspired by heritage to present and promote new creations.

On another level, the Centre for Arab and Mediterranean Music is a space open to expert and recognized musicians as well as to young musicians of confirmed talent at the beginning of their musical careers. Special events, such as “Young Virtuosos at Ennejma Ezzahra” are organized precisely with this audience in mind.

Its status as a specialized public institution and the nature of the musical activities it provides combine to make the Centre for Arab and Mediterranean Music a key stakeholder and a decisive one in the Tunisian musical landscape.
