Oum - Sahrawi songs, groove jazz and soul

From Sahrawi origins, Oum El Ghait Benessahroui, known as Oum, is a multifaceted artist born in Casablanca and raised in Marrakesh. Her songs are a mix of soul and melodic and rhythmic twists that find their origins in African, touareg or jazzy music, all completed with Hassanya poetry from the Moroccan desert culture.

Her first album « Lik Oum » was issued in 2009. Whowa, first single of her second album « Sweerty », was released with a music video in January 2010. In July 2012, she released « Harguin » as a collaboration with the Blitz Ambassador, on the theme of clandestine immigration from the Sub-Saharan Africa. Her album « Sweerty » was issued in 2012.

Oum was invited to the UNESCO head office in Paris for the International Women’s Day in order to present a concert in March 2012. Released in 2012, her most recent album « Soul of Morocco » includes songs written and composted by herself. Mirror of a fantastic cultural heritage, the album is a delightful mix of soul, jazz, gnawas and hassani rhythms in which her Sahrawi origins are reflected. Invited in June 2013 to the Essaouira Festival of Gnawa and World Music (Morocco), Oum shines in her country through her personality, her talent and her commitment, but also through musical simplicity and her moving interpretation.
