Majid Derakhshani - Neo-traditional Persan Music

« Traditional innovator », Ostad Majid Derakhshani is considered today as the best tarzen (târ player, a string intrument used in Iran and Central Asia). He composed for several classical Iranian singers, such as the internationally renowned singer Mohammed Reza Shajarian (« Dar Khial » album).

Born in a family of artists in the province of Semnan (north of Iran), he studied string instruments and composition at the Teheran University, where he was the pupil of the legendary master of persan music, târ and sitar player, Mohammed Reza Lotfi. Later on, he immigrated to Germany where he founded in the late 80s the Nawa Musikzentrum. The center became quickly the most active in terms of persan music in Cologne. His virtuosity was acclaimed internationally, during festivals and concerts, but also through radio and TV productions.

The known ambition of Majid is to familiarize the West with classical Iranian music. He does not hesitate in his compositions to combine oriental music to european elements. Adding to his classical songs, Derakhshani composed several concerti for violin, alto, cello and clarinet.

His discography counts no less than 30 CDs.
